140th anniversary of Polonia (Huns Valley)

Updated: 6 days ago

Polonia, Manitoba, was established in 1885 as Huns Valley settlement by Hungarian, Slovak and Czech families, under Count Geza de Dory. After his death, many original settlers left, and Polish settlers began to arrive in large numbers. In 1921, the community's name was changed from Huns Valley to Polonia.

On August 16 and 17, Huns Valley celebrated its 140th anniversary. The events included exhibits of family stories and photographs, homestead tours, and a local cemetery visit. Over 300 guests from Manitoba, Canada and the US attended the reunion. Name tags listed familiar links and helped connecting Andree, Kasprzyk, Kovacz, Lewandowski, Jakubowski and many other relatives and neighbors.

Ogniwo members Magdalena Blackmore and Katarzyna Rdzanek-Hodor would like to thank members of the organizing committee Denise Kolesar and Richard Kulbacki for their warm welcome and for sharing their family stories.
