The members of Ogniwo Polish Museum acknowledge that the Museum is located in Treaty One territory, on the original lands of Anishnaabe, Cree, Oji-Cree, Dakota, and Dene Peoples, and in the homeland of the Métis Nation. Ogniwo’s members respect the treaties that were made on these territories.

 

We acknowledge the roles of Polish immigrants in the settlement and continued colonization of these territories and the harms that have been brought to First Nations, Métis, and Inuit Peoples as a result. We dedicate ourselves to educating ourselves about past and current events, the larger system of colonization that many of us have benefitted from and our role within it, and to taking steps where possible to collaborate in partnership with First Nations, Inuit, and Métis peoples in the spirit of Reconciliation. 

 

The members of Ogniwo Polish Museum acknowledge that the water we use to sustain our lives is sourced from Shoal Lake 40 First Nation.

Indigenous Accord – Ogniwo Polish Museum 2021 Goals

In 2021, Ogniwo signed on as a partner to the Winnipeg Indigenous Accord. In the first year as a partner to the Accord, the members of Ogniwo Polish Museum have committed to starting on a meaningful path of learning and examination of our role in colonization and reconciliation, followed by concrete actions.

Our goals for this year are to:

• Schedule a Learning Circle, led by an Indigenous Knowledge Keeper and Expert and open to both our members and the larger Polish community in Winnipeg, to learn about and discuss the contributions and history of Indigenous Peoples, the impacts of Polish settlement on Indigenous peoples, the history and legacy of residential schools, and Treaties and the Treaty relationships.

• Incorporate a land acknowledgment and reconciliation work statement into our monthly meetings and on our website.

• Identify opportunities for a future joint initiative (e.g., exhibit, workshop, lecture) between the Museum and First Nations, Metis, and/or Inuit community members and/or organizations, grounded in learning, respect, and an appreciation of our similarities and our diversities.
